Bangladesh suffers internet disruption for cable glitches

Millions of internet users in Bangladesh have been facing disruption to their services due to glitches in the submarine cables in India.

Three submarine cables that serve Bangladesh were out of operation due to some technical glitches, according to a press release of Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB) on Thursday. Users, who faced disruption for last two days, have been told that it could take next 15 days to repair all the three cables, two owned by Indian companies and another IMEWE (India-Middle East-West Europe) consortium.

ISPAB could not explain what had caused the glitches.

The country's internet penetration is primarily dominated by mobile broadband.

According to Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC), the total number of Internet Subscribers in September 2016 reached 66.862 million including 62.968 million mobile internet subscribers and 3.794 million subscribers for ISPs and PSTNs (public switched telephone network). Endit
