One person was killed and another seven people injured in an earthquake that hit India's northeastern state of Tripura, India's state-run broadcaster, All India Radio (AIR) said Thursday.

At least 156 houses collapsed and 1156 buildings were damaged in the 5.7-magnitude earthquake, which hit the state on Tuesday, the broadcaster said.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the epicenter of the earthquake was Dhalai district of Tripura, located at 24.1 degrees north latitude and 91.9 degrees east longitude.

Six districts of the state were affected, which have been visited by State Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, along with other high officials.

Last year a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck India's neighboring country Nepal, causing large scale destruction and killing over 5,000 people and injuring another 8,000. Endit
