Slovenian experts pinpoint security challenges within EU

Slovenian National, European and global security experts pinpointed at a roundtable here on Wednesday the security challenges that Europe would face in the near future, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported.

Participants agreed that the ways of tackling security challenges must change both in Slovenia and the EU, according to the STA report.

European foreign policy expert Sabina Lange said not only European institutions but also member states must provide for security in Europe. She urged Slovenia to increase funds for security and defence in the country.

National security and defence expert Iztok Prezelj expressed doubt that the European Union (EU) and NATO would find right solutions to security threats. He said OSCE has better chances of "putting Europe on the right path again," the STA reported.

According to Prezelj, a major threat is the rise of right-wing politics, which he believes could destroy the EU and all that has been created since WWII. "If we let this happen, we will show that we've learned nothing from history," he was quoted as saying in the report.

Expert in the sociology of globalisation, Rudi Rizman, said the situation in the world has changed drastically in the last 26 years and the world is now going through a period when the old system is dying away and there is no new system in sight. Endit
