Telecom fraud suspects deported from Vietnam

Five telecom fraud suspects have been repatriated from Vietnam, the Ministry of Public Security announced Wednesday.
The suspects -- one from the Chinese mainland and four from Taiwan -- were arrested following allegations that they had been masquerading as law enforcement officials to extort money from people on the mainland through telephone calls.
The five have been implicated in at least 27 fraud cases involving more than 1.33 million yuan (around 191,300 U.S. dollars), the ministry said.
In December, Chinese police sent a work team to Vietnam, which, in cooperation with local police, uncovered a telecom fraud outfit working out of Haiphong City.
In accordance with a memorandum of understanding between the two countries, the suspects were returned to the Chinese mainland as all the victims were residents of the mainland, said the ministry.
Zhejiang public security agency will oversee the investigations. Endit
