Ljubljana ended its one-year title as the European Green Capital with an event at Congress Square in downtown of the city Monday evening.
"We are concluding a green year, which was extremely challenging, dynamic but also successful," deputy mayor Tjasa Ficko said at the event, according to Slovenian Press Agency (STA).
The European Green Capital is an honour given out annually by the European Commission in recognition of the winning city's high environmental standards and commitment to ambitious goals in sustainable development.
Ljubljana, Slovenian capital, was awarded the title for 2016.
To raise the awareness of environment protection, the government of Ljubljana picked different themes for each month, such as water, sustainable tourism, climate change and environmental innovation.
Ljubljana will hand over the title to Germany's Essen, while the Dutch city of Nijmegen was picked at a ceremony in Ljubljana last year as the European Green Capital for 2018.
The title was presented for the first time in 2010 to Stockholm, Sweden, and since then to Germany's Hamburg, Spain's Victoria-Gasteiz, France's Nantes, Denmark's Copenhagen and Great Britain's Bristol. Endit
