Inflation rate in Germany hits 41-month high

Xinhua, January 4, 2017 Adjust font size:

The inflation rate in Germany as measured by the consumer price index is expected to be 1.7 percent in December 2016, the highest level since July 2013, official data showed on Tuesday.

According to the provisional results of the federal statistical office Destatis, the inflation rates in October and November were respectively 0.8 percent.

The main reason for the increase of consumer prices in December is the rise of household energy and motor fuels costs, which are 2.5 percent more expensive than in December 2015.

On average, the inflation rate in 2016 is expected to be 0.5 percent, 0.2 percent more than the index in 2015, Destatis reported, based on the results available so far.

"This is good news for the European Central Bank, because it seeks to maintain stable prices throughout the currency area and sees this only guaranteed at inflation rates of just under two percent," German media n-tv cited economists.

Economists expect the inflation rate in the euro area to rise from 0.6 percent to 1.0 percent in December. Endit
