Zimbabwe hosts 3-day New Year carnival

Xinhua, January 1, 2017 Adjust font size:

Thousands of tourists and other festival-goers from across Africa and the world are partaking in the three-day 2016 Jameson Victoria Falls Carnival to celebrate the New Year.

The carnival, which started on Dec. 29-31, is being held in the resort town of Victoria Falls where various artists including South African musical groups LCNVL, Sketcy Bongo and The Kiffness are billed to perform.

Victoria Falls, the seventh natural wonder of the world, is Zimbabwe's prime tourist destination.

Parties have been running in the resort town from Thursday as revelers partake in the carnival festivities waiting to usher in the new year in style.

Although a train party from the second largest city of Bulawayo to Victoria Falls failed on Thursday due to poor turnout, a beach party was held in Victoria Falls on the same day to entertain the revelers.

On Friday, festival-goers had another train party with revelers being ferried from Victoria Falls train station to Jafuta, about 30 km out of Victoria Falls, for a train and bush party.

The extravaganza has seen hoteliers and tour operators enjoying brisk business from the increased number of tourists.

Organizers say what makes the carnival unique and more appealing is the wide array of activities on offer.

During the day carnival attendees spend their time bungee jumping, water rafting, walking in the rain forest or flying above the Victoria Falls.

The festival, now in its fifth year, was two years ago featured by CNN as one of the best festivals in Africa. Endit
