S. African man's death sparks violent clash with police

Xinhua, December 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

South African police on Thursday fired rubber bullets to disperse a crowd protesting over a suspected drug peddler's death in Cape Town.

A crowd of bystanders turned violent after seeing police chasing a man who collapsed and later died on the scene, witnesses said.

The crowd attacked police, prompting police to fire rubber bullets and stun grenades, said the witness who refused to be identified.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the man died of a possible overdose.

Police have registered an inquest for his death to be investigated and will conduct a post mortem to establish the reasons for his death, Van Wyk said.

He said the community became riotous and attacked the metro police members in response to the death of the man, and police had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

No one was injured in the incident, he said, adding that a 44-year-old man was arrested for allegedly damaging a marked metro police vehicle. Enditem
