Two migrants died while ten more were injured in a traffic accident near the Serbian city of Nis while being illegally smuggled across Serbia on early Thursday morning, police said.

"The accident took place when the vehicle Volkswagen Passat full of migrants, controled by a driver who so far remains unknown, hit highway's security fence," police said, adding that two deceased people came from Afghanistan.

The injured migrants were immediately transported to receive medical care in Nis, while police has initiated an intensive search for the driver who fled from the scene.

Serbian BETA News Agency, quoting Director of Nis Emergency Care Center Miodrag Lazic, reported that most of the patients were in life-threatening state with serious injuries to the limbs or head.

Lazic said five out of ten injured were children. Those injured migrants came from Afghanistan, Syria, Iran and Pakistan. Endit
