Tokyo shares open lower on weak U.S. stocks, strong yen

Tokyo shares opened lower Thursday on weak U.S. stocks overnight as well as the stronger yen against the U.S. dollar.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 163.71 points, or 0.84 percent, from Wednesday to 19,238.01.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 14.43 points, or 0.94 percent, to 1,522.37.

Decliners were led by marine transportation, bank, and iron and steel issues. Endit
