Mozambican main opposition party announces week-long cease of military hostility

Xinhua, December 28, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mozambican main opposition party Renamo announced on Tuesday in a conference call that its soldiers will not perpetrate attacks for 7 days.

The announcement was made a day after Renamo's leader Afonso Dhlakama held a phone conversation with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi who is visiting the northern Nampula province, the most populated of the country.

"I announce the cease of military hostilities starting from midnight of Tuesday in the entire national territory, there will be no conflicts between the armed forces and the main opposition militants in a week. This is a decision that results from talks between me and the president," said Dhlakama.

The opposition party leader also said that the announcement is a part of Mozambican people's desire to enjoy the festive season peacefully.

Nyusi on Monday had already advanced that a similar move should be expected from the main opposition leader after the encouraging talks both leaders held through the phone.

"It was a long call and I was very encouraged from what we always say, that one way or the other hostilities must stop, and nobody should die because of disagreement of ideas or opinions," said the president. Endit
