Xinhua, December 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Mario Soares, former President of Portugal, is in a "profound coma" and in a "critical state," according to a daily bulletin released on Monday by the Cruz Vermelha Hospital where he is hospitalized.

Soares, 92, was admitted to the Cruz Vermelha hospital on Dec. 13 and has been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

He was taken out of intensive care on Friday after showing signs of improving, but was taken back into the ICU on Saturday as his health worsened.

Soares was the president of Portugal from 1986 to 1996.

He was also co-founder of Portugal's Socialist Party and served as prime minister from 1976 to 1978 and from 1983 to 1985. Enditem
