1st LD-Writethru: Somali military official killed by Al-Shabaab militants

Xinhua, December 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

A military official of Somalia's Puntland state was on Sunday shot dead by Al-Shabaab militants in Bosaso town, a state official confirmed.

Abdikarim Hassan Firdhiye was killed "as he was walking out of one of the local FM stations where he was giving an interview over court cases," said Abdifitah Haji Aden, chairperson of the Puntland Supreme Military Court.

The Al-Shabaab Islamist group has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Puntland security forces are pursing the militants and a curfew has been imposed in Bosaso town.

Firdhiye is the third senior official of Puntland state to be killed by Al-Shabaab militants in the past two weeks.

Al-Shabaab has carried out frequent attacks in Somalia in its decade-long fight against the Somali government. Endit
