UN Security Council renews mandate of UN mission in Liberia

Xinhua, December 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Friday extended the mandate of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) until March 30, 2018.

In a unanimously adopted resolution, the 15-nation council also requested the UN Secretary-General to complete the withdrawal of all uniformed and civilian UNMIL components by April 30, 2018.

UNMIL was set up in 2003 to bolster a ceasefire agreement after a civil war killed almost 150,000 Liberians, mostly civilians, and forced some 850,000 others to flee to neighboring countries. In recent years, the Security Council has been downsizing the mission.

Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, said in recent years, the overall situation in Liberia remains stable, and the economic development has resumed.

He said China supports UNMIL's continued presence in Liberia in appropriate form to support Liberia in stabilizing its situation and assists Liberia in strengthening its capacity building.

"China always believes that UN peacekeeping operations should make adjustments in light of the actual conditions and developments on the ground until its final exits," said Wu.

"In the process, the will of the affected country needs to be fully respected and consultations need to be strengthened with regional countries, regional and sub-regional organizations," he said.

"China will work together with the international community to continue to play a positive and constructive role in peace, stability and development in Liberia," he added. Enditem
