Keppel to build Singapore's 4th desalination plant

Xinhua, December 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Keppel Infrastructure Holdings will design, build, own and operate Singapore's fourth desalination plant for a concession period of 25 years, Singapore's national water agency (PUB) announced on Thursday.

The desalination plant is expected to commence operations in 2020 and will add another 30 million gallons or approximately 137,000 cubic meters of water per day to Singapore's water supply.

Located in Marina East, the plant will be the first in Singapore with the ability to treat sea water, and fresh water from the Marina Reservoir, by using reverse osmosis and other advanced membrane technology, said Keppel Corporation in a statement.

Keppel Seghers, Keppel leading arm in environmental technology and services, will undertake the turnkey construction and commissioning of the project, and Keppel Infrastructure Services will operate the plant for 25 years, the statement added.

The company was chosen as the preferred bidder by PUB after an open tender that attracted 16 bids from seven local and international companies.

According to PUB, 25 percent of Singapore's water demand is met by desalination, with the rest of the supply coming from local catchments, imported water from Malaysia and NEWater, high-grade reclaimed water. Enditem
