Belgian police arrest man suspected of possessing weapons, explosives

Belgian police have arrested a man suspected of possessing weapons and explosives here on Monday afternoon, the Brussels prosecutor's office said in a statement Tuesday.

The man, identified as a Belgian who was born in 1982, was previously known to the judiciary for theft and causing bodily harm.

Several objects were seized during Monday's police operation in the Liedts square in Schaerbeek, Brussels, including weapons and computer equipment.

Staff from explosive devices removal and destruction service were also sent to the scene of the operation after a suspicious package was found. No explosive was found in the package later.

Relevant judicial investigation is underway, according to the Brussels prosecutor's office. Enditem
