Tokyo shares regains ground on upbeat economic assessment

Tokyo shares closed higher Tuesday after the Bank of Japan upgraded its economic assessment following a two-day policy meeting.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 102.93 points, or 0.53 percent, from Monday at 19,494.53, its highest closing level this year.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 3.30 points, or 0.21 percent, higher at 1,552.36.

Gainers were led by land transportation, fishery, agriculture and forestry, and real estate issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,338.8 billion yen (19.90 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
