German Vice Chancellor calls for more investment in research, development

Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel on Monday called for more investment into Germany.

The investment, especially in research and development, should be of priority, said Gabriel, who is also Germany's Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, at his annual press conference.

"With an investment rate of three percent, Germany is above the European average. However, the technical competitors are in Asia, where a quota of four percent is targeted," Gabriel was cited by German media Bavaria Radio.

In addition, Gabriel demanded a faster expansion of the data transmission networks.

"By 2025 at the latest, Germany should have the best digital infrastructure in the world," said Gabriel.

Meanwhile, Gabriel pointed out in his speech that the investment in the social cohesion of the whole German society is also urgently in need. Endit
