Czech president signs amendment against supporting terrorism

Xinhua, December 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Czech President Milos Zeman on Monday signed an amendment to the Criminal Code that tightens punishment for terrorism support, said the presidential office. The amendment includes the special crimes of funding and promotion of terrorism.

Under the amendment, the punishment for terrorism support in the Czech Republic will be tightened. Those who publicly support terrorism will face three to 12 years in prison instead of the current maximum of one year behind bars.

Under the current Czech law, the funding of terrorism is punished within the crime of terror attack.

The new amendment has defined a separate crime of financial or any other support for terrorism. The punishment for the crime could be up to 12 years in prison and property forfeiture can be imposed.

The amendment also introduced the new crimes of threatening with terrorism and participation in a terrorist group. The punishment for robbery, theft, fraud and blackmail committed in order to facilitate or enable a terrorist crime or its financing also was tightened under the amendment.

The amendment is likely to take effect in February 2017 after its promulgation in the Digest of Laws. Endit
