Hitler's birth home to be used for social aid, not demolished: Austrian officials

Xinhua, December 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Austrian birth home of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler will not be demolished and will be used by social aid organisation Lebenshilfe, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The decision was reached during a meeting by Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka, Governor of the State of Upper Austria Josef Pühringer, and Mayor of the town of Braunau am Inn, where the building is located, Johannes Waidbacher.

The meeting came following the cabinet's approval Wednesday to expropriate the building in Braunau am Inn from its current owner.

The Upper Austrian Lebenshilfe had already used the building as a daycare center until 2011, after which it remained empty.

"A social use, as was seen here already for many years, is a life-affirming sign, a remembrance of the victims of national-socialism, and a clear symbol against the crimes committed by Hitler," the three politicians agreed. Endit
