EU to guarantee protection of civilians in Aleppo: foreign affairs chief

Xinhua, December 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union(EU) will make the protection of civilians in the Syrian city of Aleppo a priority now, EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said here on Thursday.

Upon arrival at a one-day EU summit, Mogherini said the EU is trying to guarantee the protection of the civilians in Aleppo and the priority now is to try and make things better on the ground for civilians.

Once Syria's commercial hub, Aleppo has been divided roughly in two since 2012, with western parts under government control and eastern districts held by rebels.

The situation in Aleppo has worsened rapidly after a truce accord collapsed in September, triggering an international outcry to stop hostilities in the strategically-located Syrian city which has been contested by the government forces and the rebels since 2012. Enditem
