The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

-- Zambian President Edgar Lungu has promised citizens that they will soon see rapid and unprecedented development in every district.

Lungu said he was aware that every district has unique development needs and that his government intends to embark on development projects tailored for each district.

The Zambian leader was speaking when he visited Luangwa district, situated about 187 kilometers east of Lusaka, the country's capital. (Times of Zambia)

-- Germany has given Zambia a 100 million Euros grant for the improvement of water and sanitation from 2017 to 2019.

Part of the money will also go towards decentralization, prevention of HIV and AIDS and development of hydro-power stations, as well as sourcing of technical assistance. (Zambia Daily Mail)

-- Zambia's leading opposition leader will still be the opposition party's presidential candidate in the 2021 general elections, his vice has said.

Geoffrey Mwamba, vice-president of the United Party for National Development (UPND), said party leader Hakainde Hichilema will still be the presidential candidate and that the party was not considering going for a convention to elect new leaders.

Some party members have been calling for a convention to elect new leaders after Hichilema lost for the fifth time this year in his bid to become the country's president. (Daily Nation)

-- Zambia's ruling party has suspended over 30 officials in Luanshya town in the Copperbelt Province for not supporting the party's candidates in the August 11 polls.

Bernard Zulu, who is the Patriotic Front (PF) secretary in the district, said the officials were suspended from their positions because they supported an independent candidate for the position of mayor.

He said the ruling party wanted unity and sanity among its members hence the decision to suspend the "rebel" officials. (The Mast) Endit
