Brazilian trade surplus to hit record high in 2017: trade association

Xinhua, December 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazil's Foreign Trade Association (AEB) announced Wednesday that the country is estimated to register a record trade surplus 51.6 billion U.S dollars in 2017.

Brazil's highest annual trade surplus hitherto occurred in 2006, reaching 46.5 billion U.S. dollars.

The AEB believes Brazil's exports will amount to 197.3 billion dollars next year, and imports will total 145.7 billion dollars. The agency also foresees a trade surplus of 45.6 billion dollars for this year, with exports valued at 184.1 billion dollars and imports 138.5 billion dollars.

Brazil registered poor surplus numbers in the past few years but has seen a significant pickup in 2016. The national surplus has soared from 19.7 billion dollars in 2015 to 44.1 billion dollars in the period from January to the second week of December this year.

The surge means there could be a record-high surplus performance this year, if figures remain upbeat in the following weeks up to the end of 2016.

However, the AEB also warned possible complications and uncertainties in the upcoming year for the country's foreign trade, specifically under the impact of Donald Trump's assumption of the U.S. presidency in January. Endi
