14,000 people flee armed conflicts in N. Myanmar's Shan state

Some 14,000 local people were estimated to have fled armed conflicts in northern Myanmar's Shan state across border, according to the announcement of Joint Strategy Team (JST) for Humanitarian Response in Kachin and Northern Shan State Tuesday.

Military conflicts erupted in border areas of northern Myanmar's Shan state on Nov. 20 after an alliance of three ethnic armed groups, Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Kokang's Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) launched attacks on government's military outposts and police stations in Muse and Kutkai towns as well as a border trade zone.

In addition to those domestically displaced, a number of them have fled across border to China since then.

Starting last weekend, the Myanmar authorities have received about 1,207 displaced people who returned home through Mongko border gate, according to the office of commander-in-chief of the Defense Services. Enditem
