As of 9: 15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 76.54 points, or 0.40 percent, from Monday to 19,078.49.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 5.95 points, or 0.39 percent, to 1,525.48.
