Bulgaria seizes 50 kg of heroin at border with Turkey

Xinhua, December 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian authorities have seized 49.95 kg of heroin near the village of Belevren, some two kilometers near the country's border with Turkey, the regional Prosecutor's Office said Monday in a statement.

The illicit drugs, split into 96 packets, were found on Friday afternoon in a suburban car coming from Turkey when a border patrol stopped it.

The driver and his companion, both Bulgarians, were arrested, the statement said.

Authorities estimated the value of the seized heroin on the black market would exceed 1.1 million U.S. dollars.

Bulgaria, a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe, has seized more than 500 kg of heroin since the beginning of 2016, official data showed. Endit
