Dozens hospitalized with salmonella poisoning in Ukraine

At least 44 people, including 13 children, have been diagnosed with salmonella poisoning and hospitalized in Ukraine's southern Black Sea resort of Odessa, local media reported Friday, citing regional health officials.

Svetlana Lavryukova, a chief medical officer at the Odessa Hospital for Infectious Diseases, said that the victims were sickened after eating cakes bought in local supermarkets.

All people, who were infected with the strain, are in moderately grave condition, she said.

Local authorities do not rule out that the number of the diseased may rise as about 150 kilograms of cakes contaminated with salmonella were sold in the supermarkets across the city.

Salmonella infection usually causes abdominal pains, vomiting and fever. It may result in death if there is no proper treatment. Enditem
