Five things to look out for in LaLiga this weekend

Xinhua, December 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

As the Spanish Primera Liga moves into its 15th round of matches, here are five things to keep an eye out for this weekend.

1: Iniesta to inspire Barcelona in Pamplona.

After the Spain international Andres Iniesta picked up a knee injury in Valencia, Barcelona struggled to produce anything like the flowing football which has become their trademark.

That changed when Iniesta made his return to action for the last 30 minutes of Saturday's 'Classico' and although Real Madrid equalized in that game with a late header, had Leo Messi and Neymar taken chances they would usually score with their eyes closed, Barca would have run out comfortable winners.

Iniesta started on Tuesday against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League and Barca won 4-0 with not only Iniesta playing well, but those around him playing better than in the previous month. It seems that Iniesta's presence gives his companions a sense of belief and that confidence should be enough to see Barca to an easy win away to struggling Osasuna.

2: Can Andone shock Real Madrid?

After losing Lucas Perez to Arsenal just before the start of the season, Deportivo la Coruna looked short of goals. Romanian striker Florin Andone arrived from second division Cordoba after netting 21 goals last season. However, as Deportivo struggled at the start of the season he struggled to adapt; despite looking fast and aggressive the chances just wouldn't go in and he went 10 games without a goal.

All of that changed with a scrappy goal away to Granada on matchday 11, but since then Andone hasn't looked back and now has five goals in the last four games.

Not only has he started scoring, but his partnership with Ryan Babel looks to be blossoming and Real Madrid will have to keep a tight rein on the pair when Deportivo visit the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Saturday looking to cause an upset. If they do cause an upset, Andone's name will probably be on the scoresheet.

3: Will the real Real Sociedad stand up?

After 4 consecutive wins and a draw at home to FC Barcelona in a game they dominated from start to finish, Real Sociedad must have gone into Monday's trip to play struggling Deportivo la Coruna confident of another win. Nothing could have been further from the truth as Deportivo took them apart with some inspired attacking football to inflict a painful 5-1 defeat on the Basque side.

Real Sociedad coach Eusebio Sacristan has been able to field an unchanged starting 11 for his side's winning run, but was without midfielder David Zurutuza with a hamstring injury in Riazor.

That injury will sideline Zurutuza again when Real Sociedad entertain Valencia on Saturday, the question is: will Esteban Granero or Sergio Canales be adequate replacement or will Zurutuza prove to be the key for his side's excellent form?

Valencia are in a bad way themselves, so anything other than a win for Real Sociedad will raise question marks about the depth of their squad.

4: Will Espanyol's defense keep it tight again?

It's fair to say that watching Espanyol hasn't been a lot of fun this season as Quique Sanchez Flores' side started slowly despite a busy summer in the transfer market.

That has changed of late as Quique has built from the back making his side tough to score against. That was shown as they held off Atletico Madrid with relative ease last weekend and the Barcelona-based side has now gone 496 minutes without conceding a goal.

With struggling Sporting Gijon the next visitors to their Cornella Stadium, Espanyol fans will be optimistic that Diego Lopez will keep another clear sheet and that strikers Pablo Piatti and Gerard Moreno will be able to fire them to another three point haul.

Quique has it clear. If you don't concede, then you only need to score one goal to win.

5: Can Aduriz and Raul banish Athletic's away day blues against Betis?

Athletic Club Bilbao kick off the weekend in seventh place in LaLiga, just two points off a top-four spot. The Basque side travels to face Betis, who look to have added some steel to their play after the arrival of Victor Sanchez as first team coach and whose confidence is clearly on the rise.

Athletic dug deep to beat local rivals Eibar in their San Mames Stadium last week, overcoming the absence of suspended duo, Aritz Aduriz and Raul Garcia, who had scored 10 of their 17 league goals prior to that game.

The pair also rested as Athletic drew 1-1 away to Rapid Vienna on Thursday and should be ready for action in Seville, where Athletic will have to improve on some timid away performances such as a 3-1 defeat to Las Palmas and a 0-0 draw against Espanyol where they failed to produce a shot on target.

If Aduriz and Garcia are at their best, Athletic can beat their awayday blues and show they are candidates for a top four finish, if not and Betis' recovery will probably continue. Endit
