Tokyo shares gain ground in morning on strong European, U.S. stocks

Tokyo shares closed higher by break Friday morning on strong European, U.S. stocks overnight following the European Central Bank's decision to extend its bond buying program.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 208.62 points, or 1.11 percent, from Thursday to 18,974.09.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 9.03 points, or 0.6 percent, to 1,521.72.

Gainers were led by mining, oil and coal product issues. Endit
