Bulgaria seizes nearly 12 kg of heroin

Xinhua, December 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian law enforcement authorities seized 11.75 kg of heroin at Kapitan Petko Voyvoda checkpoint near the country's southeastern border with Greece, officials said Thursday.

The drug, split into 24 packets, was found early on Wednesday morning in a secret compartment in a Bulgaria-registered car entering from Greece, Bulgarian prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 580,000 U.S. dollars.

The driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old Bulgarian citizen, was arrested at the scene.

Bulgaria, a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe, has seized more than 500 kg of heroin since the beginning of 2016, official data showed. Endit
