The following are news highlights in Zambia's major media outlets on Thursday.

-- Zambia and Russia have signed four memorandums of understanding, among them a deal to turn the southern African nation into a hub of nuclear science for peaceful purposes.

The four MoUs, to be implemented over a period of 15 years, include assisting Zambia develop its nuclear science, strengthen cooperation in nuclear safety and regulation, cooperation in enhancement of public awareness of nuclear energy and the development of a project for the construction of a Center for Nuclear Science and Technology.

The deals will also see Russia's energy giant, Rosatom, to ultimately construct a 2-gigawatt nuclear power plant. (Times of Zambia)

-- The Zambian government has been urged to formulate a legislated mineral revenue sharing mechanism to protect the lives of people living in mining communities.

The Center for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD), a local think-tank, said the proposed mineral revenue sharing mechanism should act as a form of compensation by ensuring that some of the mineral royalty tax remitted by mining firms was retained to the host communities that are often negatively affected by mining activities. -- Chinese businessmen are expected to come to Zambia to invest in agriculture, railways and agro-processing following a visit by 10 provincial ministers to the Asian nation last month, head of delegation Nathaniel Mubukwanu has said.

Mubukwanu said the two countries have embarked on twinning projects in all the 10 provinces with provinces from China with a view to strengthen bilateral relations and increasing potential investment opportunities that the country got from China. (Daily Nation) Endit
