Mexican birthday party expected to draw over one million guests

Xinhua, December 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

More than 1 million people have confirmed they will attend a birthday party in north Mexico, after the video invitation went viral on Facebook.

The ballooning guest list has gotten so much attention that on Wednesday most of the country's leading dailies, and even a few international media outlets, reported on the upcoming event.

"Are you going to Rubi's sweet 15 party? Then this is what you should know," the daily Excelsior headlined an article on the Dec. 26 bash celebrating the 15th birthday of the now famous Rubi.

Mexican budget airline Interjet got in on the action on Tuesday, telling potential passengers to "attend the biggest event of the year," and announcing a 30 percent discount on its flights to San Luis Potosi, the birthday girl's home state.

Golden Globe-winning Mexican actor Gael Garcia also joined in the fun, starring in a parody of the original video, in which Rubi's father proudly boasts there will be numerous bands to entertain guests and even prizes.

While the family was initially overwhelmed, leading to rumors the party was canceled, the celebration appears to be going ahead as planned.

In fact, the state governor and the mayor of La Joya, the birthday girl's hometown, have both said they will attend, according to the daily La Jornada.

How many more people will show up is anyone's guess. Enditem
