Burundi marks taxpayer's day with call to promote patriotism

Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza has called for the promotion of patriotism through paying taxes, as the east African nation Tuesday marked the national taxpayer's day for the first time.

During the celebration of the taxpayer's day, the Burundian president said that the taxpayer's day is a "special day" for Burundi.

"The life of Burundi depends on taxes paid by the country's citizens. This is an opportunity to thank all people who pay taxes. Paying taxes is a source of development and the development originates from us comes back to us," said Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza in his remarks.

Nkurunziza said that paying taxes is an evidence of "patriotism" and added that the taxpayer's day happens at a time when the number of taxpayers has increased in Burundi.

He seized his opportunity to request the Burundi Revenue Authority to "vigorously" fight against fraud and illicit trade.

Nkurunziza underlined that the taxpayers' money is used in all sectors of the country.

According to him, those sectors include peace and security, agriculture, education, health, public infrastructures, sports and culture. Endit
