Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise among Mongolian teens due to lack of sexual education, local health officials and NGOs have warned.
According to a recent report from the Mongolian Society for Family Well-being, an NGO working to promote family planning and health issues, teens have poor knowledge about sexuality and reproductive health and don't know how to prevent the spread of STDs and unwanted pregnancy, which has result in suicide attempts.
Galbadrakh Sharkhuu, manager of the Mongolian Society for Family Well-Being, noted that about 10 percent of some one thousand teenagers surveyed by the society attempted suicide due to an STD infection and unwanted pregnancy. Teenagers from 15 to 19 years old make up 24 percent of STD infections among the population.
Urtnasan Chuluunbat, medical doctor at the Mongolian Research Center for Communicable Diseases said, "Many young woman are coming to our center due to STD infection. This shows they didn't receive any sexuality and safe sex education when they were in secondary schools."
Currently, health education is taught in secondary schools as part of physical education or biology lessons. Some health experts have recommended that health education be provided as a stand-alone lesson and not part of another class. Endi
