Zambia, S. Africa start talks on Joint Commission for Cooperation

Top officials from Zambia and South Africa on Monday began talks on the possibility of opening a Joint Commission for Cooperation since the opening of diplomatic relations in 1990.
The meeting opened in Pretoria, South Africa ahead of a three-day State visit by Zambian President Edgar Lungu this week, according to a statement from the Zambian Embassy in South Africa.
Acting Director of South Africa's Department of International Relations Ex Makaya said the relations between the two countries are that of sister republics that have cooperated in many fields in the past.
He said the two countries now have an opportunity to inaugurate the Joint Commission for Cooperation to cement the ties.
While acknowledging that some work was done during past visits, he noted that there has been no official setting up and inauguration of the Commission
Zambia's Ministry of Defense Permanent Secretary Sturdy Mwale said during the start of talks that the two countries should continue with good relations.
Ministers representing the two countries will sign the agreement of cooperation on Wednesday this week.
The Zambian leader is visiting South Africa this week for a three-day State visit at the invitation of his counterpart Jacob Zuma. Endit
