A Lebanese soldier was killed and another injured late Sunday when unknown assailants opened fire on an army checkpoint in a northern town, the military said on Monday.

"Yesterday, unknown individuals opened fire on an army checkpoint in Bkaasafrine in Dinnieh, killing an army soldier and injuring another," the Army Guidance Directorate said in a statement.

Army units "are carrying out raids searching for the shooters," the statement said.

A local television station, LBCI TV, identified the killed solider as Abdul Kader Nehman, from the country's 10th Infantry Brigade. Endit
