Xi calls for smaller but more capable army

Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed further military reform by downsizing the army while improving its combat capabilities and optimizing the structure.

Xi, also chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), made the remarks at a two-day conference on reforms of the military's size, structure, and formation which ended Saturday.

"This is a major, inevitable change," Xi told the meeting, "We must seize the opportunity and make breakthroughs." Endi
