Women suicide victims in Britain at highest level in 10 years

Xinhua, December 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

The suicide rate among women in Britain has reached its highest level for a decade, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported Friday.

Deaths from suicide rose to 6,188 in 2015, a slight increase on the 6,122 people who ended their own lives in the previous year, ONE data showed.

The male suicide rate decreased while female rate increased to its highest level in a decade, added ONS, giving a rate of 10.9 deaths per 100,000 population.

Jodie Withers, an ONS health analyst, said while the increase in the suicide rate this year is a result of an increase in female suicides, males still account for three quarters of all suicides.

"There has also been a continued increase in suicides for males under the age of 30," Withers said. Endit
