Tokyo shares closed the morning session lower on Friday as investors sought to lock in gains helped by a rise in the previous day with the Nikkei index ending at its highest level this year.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 87.67 points, or 0.47 percent, from Thursday to 18,425.45.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange dropped 2.48 points, or 0.17 percent, to 1,480.79.
