Belgian prosecutors indict two over knife attack on policemen

Xinhua, December 2, 2016 Adjust font size:

Belgian federal prosecutors said Thursday they had indicted two people on charges of terrorism activities and attempted murder over the Aug. 6 machete attack on two policemen in Charleroi.

The two charged, Sabrina Z., 36, and Farid L., 37, are among the six detained by police on Wednesday for possible connection with the attack, in which an attacker seriously wounded two policemen before he was shot dead in front of the police station of Charleroi.

The detention of a third person was extended by 24 hours, while the other three were released.

Eight searches were conducted Wednesday by authorities in the country to trace possible accomplices of the dead attacker Khaled Babbouri.

Babbouri, a 33-year-old Algerian who had lived in Belgium illegally since 2012, was not known to the intelligence services, though he had criminal records and was facing deportation orders. Enditem
