Eurozone unemployment rate lowest since 2009 in October

The eurozone's seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate in October declined to the lowest level since July 2009 at 9.8 percent, Eurostat reported on Thursday.

The rate was down from 9.9 percent in September 2016 and from 10.6 percent in October 2015. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate in the EU was 8.3 percent in October, the lowest rate in the bloc since February 2009.

Among the member states, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in the Czech Republic and Germany. The highest unemployment rates were observed in Greece and Spain.

The number of people unemployed decreased by 178,000 in the eurozone from the previous month to 15.9 million. Compared with a year ago, unemployment fell by 1.124 million in the euro area.

However, the youth (under 25 years old) unemployment rate held steady at 20.7 percent in October. Endit
