Fatah congress gears up to elect core leadership

Xinhua, December 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Fatah Palestinian political party's seventh conference formed a committee on Thursday in order to oversee party elections.

Conference spokesperson Mahmoud Abu Al-Haija said in a press conference that the committee is accepting candidacy forms for both the central committee and revolutionary council.

He explained that the committee will hold the election in the coming two days.

Abu Al-Haija added that conference members began their third work day by discussing party committees, most importantly the economic, financial and political committees presented by the current central committee members.

The 1,400 delegates participating in the Fatah party conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah started the process on Tuesday to elect a new leadership, a central committee and a revolutionary council.

The five day conference is expected to elect 18 members of the central committee, Fatah party's highest leadership committee, and 80 to 85 members into the revolutionary council.

The last Fatah conference took place in the city of Bethlehem in 2009, the first conference held in Palestinian territories after 20 years without conferences. Endit
