Repeat Austrian presidential election to cost at least 16 mln USD: ministry

Xinhua, November 30, 2016 Adjust font size:

The cost of the repeat run-off round for the Austrian presidential election scheduled for Dec. 4 is to amount to at least 15 million euros (16 million U.S. dollars), the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

Austria Press Agency reported the figure in comments from the ministry, following claims in a report on television station Puls 4 that the total could amount to nearly 40 million euros.

The report had taken the costs for the postponement and subsequent rescheduling of the election that were provided by the city of Linz, and extrapolated them to reach a nation-wide total.

The ministry would not comment on this figure, though it did say the final total would be calculated after the conclusion of the election.(1 euro = 1.06 U.S.dollars) Endit
