1st Ld Writethru: Heavy firing inside military installation in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, November 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

Heavy exchange of gunfire continues inside a military installation attacked by militants Tuesday morning in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

The militants believed to belong to a fidayeen (suicide attackers) group entered an army camp early morning in Nagrota, about 281 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A group of militants attacked an army establishment in Nagrota in the outskirts of Jammu city this morning with heavy gunfire and grenades," an official said. "The firing from the group inside the camp is being retaliated and heavy exchange of fire is continuing."

Officials said the number of attackers inside the camp was being ascertained.

The area has been cordoned off and reinforcements rushed to the spot to take on attackers, officials said.

Reports said two Indian army troopers including an officer were wounded in the attack.

Authorities have ordered closure of all the schools in Nagrota in wake of the attack.

Nagrota is a huge military installation in Jammu and headquarter of India army's 16 Corps in the region.

In September, a similar attack on Indian army's camp in Uri town, northwest of Srinagar left 19 troopers dead and many others wounded. Endit
