Namibia raises funds for road safety campaign

Xinhua, November 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

The business community in Namibia has raised one million Namibian dollars (about 71, 000 U.S. dollars) for the annual road safety campaign.

The campaign will run until Jan. 16 next year.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the MVA Fund, the National Road Safety Council, Roads Authority, Windhoek City Police, Namibia Police Force, Private Sector Road Safety Forum, Roads Fund Administration and the works ministry.

Namibia Police deputy commissioner Ralph Ludwig says they will focus on enhancing visibility on the roads, alcohol screening, vehicle roadworthiness checks and responding to crashes.

With a high rate of accidents that claim mass causalities, Namibia has been running road safety campaign for some years now.

So far this year, 617 people were killed on the Namibian roads, while 6,180 others were injured in 3,601 crashes. Enditem
