Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC wins AFC Champions League final

Xinhua, November 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC won the AFC Champions League 2016 title 3-2 on aggregate after holding Al Ain FC of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 1-1 Saturday night in the second leg of their final.

With its victory, the green-black dressed team cashed in 3 million US dollars in prize money and also secured a place at December's FIFA Club World Championship.

Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors FC won the first leg 2-1 at home. Al Ain squandered a penalty to let Jeonbuk off the hook. Brazilian forward Dyanfres shot over the bar in front of home fans at the sold-out Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.

Jeonbuk scored 30 minutes after the opening of the match when substitute Han Kyo-won fired home from a corner.

It was a bit of an irony that South Korean midfielder Lee Myung-joo cut down the deficit with a volley of his own that bounced off the turf to beat goalkeeper Soon-tae Kwoun.

For Al Ain, dressed in blue, the disappointment was huge and visible among the 23,300 local fans who gathered amid good weather.

Al Ain superstar Omar Abdulrahman told Dubai media that he considered this second-leg final "the game of my life". Nevertheless, the visible disappointed forward accepted the fair play award for his team after the match. Endit
