Reaction of Belgian PM to death of Fidel Castro

"With the departure of Fidel Castro, it is undoubtedly an important page of world political history that turns, a definitive end to the Cold War that had so divided the populations in the last century," Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said Saturday following the death of the Cuban revolutionary leader.

"I hope that the political career of Fidel Castro can be studied appropriately in order to allow the future generations not to privilege options of retreat with heavy consequences for the people," read a statement released to the public on Saturday in Brussels.

"For my part, I will especially remember the signs of opening-up committed by President Barack Obama and Raul Castro, in 2014 first during the announcement of reconciliation after 55 years of confrontation, then in March 2016 when Barack Obama went to Cuba," said Michel.

"Those elements will only have positive effects on the Cuban population even though it is still necessary to plead for a total lifting of the economic embargo that strikes the island, "concluded Michel.

Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders also presented Saturday his condolences to Raul Castro, the current president of Cuba, and all his relatives. Endit
