Myanmar ruling party to compete in by-election

Xinhua, November 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Aung San Suu Kyi-led National League for Democracy (NLD) of Myanmar has designated candidates to compete for 18 vacant parliamentary seats out of 19 in April by-election next year, NLD announced Saturday.

The by-election is to be held on April 1, 2017 to fill 19 vacant parliamentary seats as some of which were left after parliament members were appointed as government cabinet ministers, while other vacancies were left as some constituencies failed to hold the polling in the last general election in 2015.

Of the total of 19 parliamentary seats, nine are with the House of Representatives (Lower House), three with the House of Nationalities (Upper House) and seven with the state parliaments.

According to the time table of the Union Election Commission (UEC), the date for overseas voters to cast vote in advance is initially set for between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15 and date for submission of names of candidates is between Nov. 28 and Dec. 7.

Campaign period is scheduled for Jan. 30 to March 30, 2017. Election result or names of winning parliamentarians-elect will be announced within the next four days following the by-election on April 1, 2017.

In the Nov. 8 election in last year, the NLD won an absolute majority of 255 or 79 percent with the House of Representatives, 135 or 80 percent with the House of Nationalities and 475 or 75.7 percent with the Region or State Parliament as well as 21 ethnic representatives to the Region or State Parliaments.
