Nikkei hits year high in morning on weaker yen

Tokyo shares closed higher by break Friday morning, with the Nikkei index hitting the year high on the weaker yen against the U.S. dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 140.53 points, or 0.77 percent, from Thursday to 18,473.94.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 10.30 points, or 0.71 percent, at 1,470.26.

Gainers were led by transportation equipment, nonferrous metal and precision instrument issues. Endit
