Czech people spent 300 mln dollars on books in 2015

Xinhua, November 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Czech people spent about 7.5 billion crowns (about 300 million U.S. dollars) on books in 2015, which is about a five percent year-on-year growth, figures showed on Thursday.

According to the estimated turnover released by the Association of Czech Booksellers and Publishers (SCKN), the increased amounts is about 300 to 400 million crowns.

Czech book market grew again after several years of stagnation, SCKN said the increased people's spending on books were partly because of the value-added tax (VAT) reduction and economic growth in the country.

The VAT on books fell from 15 percent to 10 percent from January last year. However, the VAT on books in the Czech Republic is still at a high level compared with other European countries.

According to the SCKN, the sales of electronic books continued to grow and reached about 106 million crowns including VAT in last year, which equaled to 1.38 percent of the total turnover of the Czech book market.

The audiobooks's market also grew in last year, its sales volume reached nearly 82 million crowns compared with the 55 million crowns in 2014. (1 U.S. dollar = 25 crowns) Endit
